LMO Summer Concert – 2 July 2017

LMO Summer concert flyer 2 July 2017

LMO presents a programme of quintessentially British music for its summer concert, with English folk tunes in glorious settings and illustrating ‘composers at work’.

Moorside Suite H 173 – Gustav Holst
Tilikum – Martin Humphries
The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra Op 34 – Benjamin Britten
5 Variants on ‘Dives and Lazarus’ – Ralph Vaughan Williams
A Lincolnshire Posy – Percy Grainger

New work to be recorded by BBC
The concert includes the world premiere of Martin Humphries’s Tilikum, which tells the story of the eponymous killer whale (the subject of the 2013 documentary film Blackfish), and written especially for LMO as part of Making Music’s nationwide Adopt a Composer Scheme. This work will be recorded by BBC Radio 3.

Taking folk songs and sea shanties as their starting points, Vaughan Williams Five Variants of ‘Dives and Lazarus’ and Holst’s A Moorside Suite set off a rarely-performed orchestral arrangement of the six folk songs in Grainger’s magnificent suite, the Lincolnshire Posy.  The evening concludes with Benjamin Britten’s remarkable variations on a theme by Henry Purcell in The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.
