London Medical Orchestra’s summer concert features the recently-restored WWI memorial organ of St Mellitus Church in Camille Saint-Saëns’ famous Symphony No. 3 ‘Organ’.

We start the evening with the premiere of Dominic McGonigal’s Cathedral Symphony, written for LMO. Its four movements are inspired by astonishing architectural features of Lincoln, Bayeux, Beauvais and Mechelen Cathedrals; Gothic, Norman and Romanesque details are depicted by both full orchestral grandeur and quieter, mysterious harmonies.

Ruth Gipps’s Clarinet Concerto was written in 1940 for her fiancé, yet extraordinarily was only first performed 20 years after her death by the London Repertoire Orchestra in 2019, an ensemble she founded in 1955. Written when Gipps was only 19, the Clarinet Concerto demonstrates a lyrical and gratifying compositional voice, and prominently features the oboe (her own orchestral instrument) as duet partner with the solo clarinet.
