The London Medical Orchestra was formed in 1954, consisting mainly of refugee doctors and dentists from central Europe, conducted by Dr Hans Ucko and led by Dr J Bachner. It combined with the Three Hospitals Orchestra in 1964. Although many of the present members of the Orchestra are not members of the medical or ancillary professions, the Orchestra continues to have as its main purpose the supporting of medical charities through fund-raising concerts. Among former conductors are Norman Del Mar, Colin Davis and Bernard Keefe. Mr Dickson Wright was president for many years. Sir Adrian Boult and Jacqueline du Pré are among our past Vice Presidents. In Autumn 2005 we moved to a new rehearsal venue. The Roundhouse in Highbury provides us with a spacious hall with good acoustic properties. Also, because it is a community centre we try to contribute to the life in that community. For instance, some of our members have formed a ceilidh band that has played at a number of their fund raising functions. It is also hoped we might play occasional concerts there in the future. The Highbury Roundhouse is itself a charity and performs a major role in the local community providing a focus for local disadvantaged people.
Our professionals In order to attain a high standard of performance amateur musicians need a great deal of practice and tuition. Each concert requires at least ten rehearsals and much private practice over a three month period. Our professional players fulfil their role with the enthusiasm and dedication necessary for such charity events. Michael Axtell – Click Here to read more about our conductor and wind tutor.
